Climbing instruction
Moonyong Park began his physical training by practicing Taekwon Do and Gumdo (aka Kendo) as a youth. It was a perfect foundation for sports climbing which was recognized as an official sport in Korea in the late 80’s. Moonyong quickly joined the national team and began competing internationally. He attended competitions in Japan, Italy and the U.S. As well as sending routes in Jogasaki, Japan; Frankenjura, Germany; Bergamo, Italy (where he competed in a World Cup competition), Yosemite, CA and American Fork, Utah. His sports climbing career peaked when he became the first Korean climber to make it to a World Cup final in Berkeley, CA in 1990. After his competition climbing days were over, he continued alpine/ice climbing in Banff, Alberta; Ouray, CO; Grand Tetons, WY; Mt. Rainier, WA and Mt. Hood, OR. Along with repairing climbing shoes, other interests include fly fishing, cycling, backcountry skiing and Judo.
Moonyong Park has lived in Charlottesville, VA since 2001 and is the father to three sons and husband to local acupuncturist, Kyung Nam Lee. He was certified by the French Alpine Federation to teach sports climbing after completing their instructor’s course in 1991. Moonyong is a gifted teacher with a keen understanding of the biomechanics of sports climbing. His instruction includes education on technique, strength training, and competition preparedness. All instruction is local and will be held at Rocky Top Climbing Gym. One hour classes require at least two students and a maximum of three.
